Replaced my trusty 3-door Mahindra Thar with a Thar Roxx

I got back 70% if the purchase price of the Mahindra Thar 3-Door, after nearly 4 years of ownership! This speaks to why it is great to buy M&M SUVs at launch

BHPian 84.monsoon recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

After nearly 4 fantastic years of trouble free ownership, sold the Thar on Spinny yesterday, to make room for the Thar Roxx MX3 P AT in Stealth Black, which has already arrived at the dealer yard. Going to miss the awesome, butter-smooth and effortless mHawk diesel engine, paired with the seamless 6-speed Aisin torque converter transmission – a match made in heaven. But eagerly looking forward to experience the even more powerful mStallion, with 175 HP and 380 NM, which will hopefully make up for it.

I paid around Rs. 17 lakhs on-road for the Thar 3 door in December 2020. The surprising thing is that after nearly 4 years, for just Rs. 1 lakh more, I am getting a car that has got:

  • 40% MorePower
  • 25% more torque
  • Two additional doors and a much more spacious second row
  • Reclining rear seats
  • 6 airbags instead of 2
  • 5 star safety instead of 4 star (BNCAP)
  • Huge amount of additional boot space
  • Wireless Android Auto
  • Wireless charger
  • Push button start
  • Rear disc brakes instead of drum brakes
  • LED headlamps instead of halogen
  • A proper metal top instead of fiber top
  • Rear washer/wiper and defogger
  • Micro hybrid tech with engine start-stop
  • Useable, retractable driver armrest
  • Electric.power steering instead of hydraulic
  • 10.25 inch touchscreen ICE instead of 7 inch
  • ..and many other smaller net-new features

All I lose is Alloy wheels, fog lamps, 4WD and TPMS, the first two can be added for 60K. As for 4WD, I have not had a chance to use it a lot, other than a few organized offroad drive events by Terra Tigers,. But I did come back with loose bumpers, paint scrapes and scratches from some of them, which I had to spend money to fix subsequently. Probably better to invest in a cheap used 1st Gen Thar or Jimny for 4×4 duties. I think will miss more, the feeling of having a 4WD, than the actual use of it.

Although I have a 4WD top-end Diesel Roxx in Nebula Blue booked with delivery expected next May, the pricing is way too high. At nearly 29 lakh on road, it does not make any sense in terms of value for money at that price point. You are paying luxury vehicle prices, but getting a utility vehicle with a skin-level pretence of luxury, when you go to AX7L 4WD territory on the Roxx. MX3 P AT is crazy value for money from Mahindra, which tipped the scales for me to go for this variant.

Though there is a possibility of small niggles, you get the car at a low launch price, which will go up a lot subsequently. So when you are ready to sell the car, you stand to get a much better sale price realization.

Selling through Spinny was a very semelss process. Spinny quoted a reasonable amount upfront on the App and increased it by around 20K during the subsequent phone call with the agent. Inspection was done as scheduled and after about 30-45 minutes of document e-signatures and various Aadhar verifications etc., the money was credited to my account and the pick-up person drove the car away into the sunset!

Bye Bye Thar and Welcome, Roxx!
