Hyderabad: Five persons have been arrested from Asifabad district for allegedly exhuming a body from a fortnight-old grave and extracting the bones of the deceased person to perform black magic, hoping it would reveal hidden treasures.
A 50-year-old man from Etiguda village died on Jan 16 after being ill for some time. The family buried him the following day in a cotton field on the outskirts of the village.
On Jan 29 morning, the deceased person’s eldest son and friends noticed a foul odour emanating from the grave. When they arrived at the burial site, they discovered the hands of the body had been mutilated, and the bones had been removed, local police officials said.
The family immediately alerted the cops, who launched an investigation. Locals said they saw strangers frequenting the home of Gedam Ravuji, a villager. Based on the lead, officials set up a checkpoint in Kushnapalli village on Jan 29 and stopped a suspicious vehicle carrying five men.
Upon questioning, the men confessed to exhuming the body and taking five bones, which they had treated with turmeric paste for black magic rituals. The five suspects were arrested the following day.
The accused have been identified as Ainaguri Ramesh, Kasarapu Parameshwar, Athram Shankar, Gedam Ravuji, and Golle Raju. The bones were recovered by police and returned to the authorities for further investigation.
