Hyderabad: The central govt has decided to fully fund the 650 crore-worth MMTS project extension on Ghatkesar-Yadadri stretch, as part of railway budget allocations for Telangana.
According to South Central Railway (SCR) officials, the Centre decided to fund the project after the state govt was unable to contribute its share.
The scope of the project includes additional railway lines and redevelopment of stations.
The state’s railway budget allocation, which stood at 5,336 crore in 2024-25, is expected to increase this fiscal. However, it is likely to remain below the 6,000 crore mark. The railway authorities will announce the final budget allocation in two to three days.
“After many requests to the state govt for its share of the project funding failed, the railways decided to go ahead on its own and decided to fund the project independently, which falls under MMTS phase II,” said a railway official.
Initially, the project was estimated at 450 crore, but the cost rose by 200 crore. The original plan was for a cost-sharing arrangement, where the state govt would provide two-thirds of the funds, while the railways would contribute one-third.Sources said the budget may include provisions for doubling of tracks on various lines, including Dornakal-Bhadrachalam, Motumari-Vishnupuram and Guntur-Bibinagar.
The tripling work on sections like Vijayawada-Kazipet and Kazipet-Balharshah is likely to be completed by 2026.
