The NDA won all six seats in the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) Standing Committee elections held on Monday. Despite the YSRCP having the highest number of councillors in the corporation, the five candidates from TDP and one from JSP emerged victorious with a significant majority, securing a clean sweep.
A total of 12 candidates contested for the six-member committee, with six from the YSRCP. The election saw participation from all 56 eligible voters, each of whom could vote for six candidates of their choice.
The election was conducted smoothly in the GMC council hall from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. After the voting concluded, the counting of votes was carried out in the presence of the candidates. The six newly elected members of the Standing Committee are Eranti Varaprasad (35th Division) with 33 votes, Dasari Lakshmi Durga (16th Division – JSP) with 32 votes, Sheikh Meeravali (10th Division) with 32 votes, Nukavarapu Balaji (46th Division) with 31 votes, Kommineni Koteswara Rao (43rd Division) with 31 votes, and Muppavarapu Bharati (51st Division) with 30 votes.
The losing candidates include Marri Anjali (2nd Division) with 24 votes, Gopi Srinivas (33rd Division) with 24 votes, Rajalatha Busi (34th Division) with 24 votes, Dhoopati Vamsi Babu (53rd Division) with 23 votes, Yattla Ravi Kumar (5th Division) with 23 votes, and Adaka Padmavati (24th Division) with just one vote.
GMC Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu praised the peaceful conduct of the elections and appreciated the efforts of the Election Officer and Additional Commissioner Challa Obulesu, along with other officials and staff. He highlighted that the notification for the elections was issued on January 16, and the entire process was carried out as per schedule. The GMC Mayor Kavati Manohar Naidu, YSRCP leader, will serve as the chairperson of the Standing Committee.
The commissioner also extended his gratitude to the election authorities, municipal staff, and police department for ensuring a smooth and transparent electoral process.
