Two siblings, aged six and four, drowned in a pit dug for an irrigation project in Telangana’s Mahbubnagar while playing in a field.
The children, Bhagyalakshmi (6) and Mahesh (4), accidentally fell into the water-filled pit dug for the Palamuru-Rangareddy project while their mother was engaged in farming activities in a nearby field.
The incident sparked protests from the victims’ families and local villagers, who staged a demonstration at the accident site, demanding justice and accountability.
Police Inspector Adi Reddy said the incident occurred on the morning of February 1 and two bodies have been recovered.
“The girl’s body was recovered yesterday (Saturday), while the boy’s body was found today (Sunday). A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway,” the inspector said.
Authorities are expected to examine safety measures at the project site following the incident.
