Deva box office collection day 4: Just like that, the first month of the new year has come to an end, and yet, Bollywood remains stuck in the slump it has been grappling with since the beginning of last year. Not only has the industry failed to deliver any standout films, but even the average and decent movies have been unable to make any impact at the box office. This continued downturn suggests that only an exceptional film or a top-notch entertainer can revive its fortunes. The underperformance of the Shahid Kapoor and Pooja Hegde-starrer Deva underscores the same, and the film has, unfortunately, failed the crucial first Monday test too, earning even less than Shahid’s box office flop Batti gul meter chalu (2018).
On Monday, the action thriller recorded an India nett collection of just Rs 2.55 crore, reflecting a steep 64.83 per cent drop from its Sunday earnings of Rs 7.25 crore, according to early estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk. This has brought Deva’s domestic total to Rs 21.7 crore. However, its production company Zee Studios has claimed that the action thriller registered a first-weekend global gross of Rs 34.01 crore; although this too is an underwhelming figure, considering the significant pre-release buzz the movie had created.
During the day, the Rosshan Andrrews directorial saw a disappointing overall occupancy rate of just 8.55 per cent in the Hindi market. While the morning shows started weak at 5.2 per cent occupancy, only marginal improvements were observed in the figure as the day progressed — with the rate rising to 8.35 per cent in the afternoon, 9.05 per cent in the evening and peaking at 11.58 per cent during night screenings.

While Deva’s first Monday collection is better than Shahid’s box office flop Jersey (Rs 1.6 crore), it remains well below the numbers registered by his recent hits like Teri baaton mein aisa uljha jiya (Rs 3.65 crore) and Kabir singh (Rs 17.54 crore). Disappointingly, it has even fallen short of the actor’s Batti Gul Meter Chalu (Rs 3.16 crore), which ultimately failed at the box office.
In her review of the movieSCREEN’s Shubhra Gupta wrote, “There are at least a couple of instances when Shahid Kapoor does come alive, reminding us of the actor that he can be. Both are scenes in which he allows his character to be vulnerable.”
