Suryapet: Tension escalated at the SRSP canal distributary regulator near Koti Nayak Tanda in Athmakur (S) Mandal, Suryapet district on Tuesday.

Farmers from two distributary canals found themselves in a face-off after some farmers diverted water meant for the Penpahad area to the Mothkur area by partially sealing the regulator through welding.

The distributary regulator became the epicentre of chaos, as the welding of the canal gate led to the diversion of water from Penpahad to Mothkur, causing agricultural fields in Penpahad to dry up. Farmers expressed their distress as their repeated pleas to the officials went unanswered, leaving their crops to wither.

In a desperate effort, farmers from Penpahad Mandal pooled their resources and, at their own expense, removed the welding to restore the water flow. This action finally caught the attention of the officials, who rushed to the scene.

However, the officials claimed ignorance about the welding incident and released water to both areas. The farmers, boiling with anger, confronted the officials, who subsequently made a hasty exit.
