3 reservoirs, 3 pressure filters inaugurated

Hyderabad:The HMWS&SB inaugurated three newly constructed reservoirs and three pressure filters in the Rajendranagar Assembly constituency on Thursday. Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar and minister D. Sridhar Babu led the inauguration, joined by MLC Mahender Reddy, Rajendranagar MLA Prakash Goud, MLC Mirza Rahmat Baig, HMWS&SB MD Ashok Reddy, senior officials and local representatives.

The newly inaugurated reservoirs include a 2.5-million-litre (ML) reservoir at Sports Park, Alkapuri (Manikonda municipality), a 5-ML reservoir at Greenlands, Manchirevula (Narsingi municipality), and a two-ML reservoir in Shamshabad municipality. These facilities will ensure a reliable water supply to areas such as Greenlands, Manchirevula village, Balajinagar, gated communities beyond the ORR, Huda Colony, Siddanti, RB Nagar, Siddeshwara Colony, Adarshnagar, Rehmannagar, Madhuranagar, Soma Enclave and Srinivasa Enclave.

Additionally, to meet rising demand ahead of summer, the water board introduced three pressure filters with a combined 11 million litre per day (MLD) capacity. Two filters at Himayatsagar (5 MLD and 3 MLD) and one at Gandipet (3 MLD) will improve water quality, while a separate filter at Budvel will further enhance treatment processes. The 5 MLD pressure filter was built at the cost of `2.75 crore and the 3 MLD filter at `1.75 crore. The pressure filters are compact, cost-effective and easy to operate, allowing treated water to be directly released into distribution sumps and tanker-filling stations, ensuring a steady and uninterrupted supply.

As part of ORR Project Phase-2, the five-ML Greenlands reservoir in Manchirevula, constructed at ₹6.14 crore, will benefit 10,150 residents, with 16,000 more expected to gain access. The 2-ML Shamshabad reservoir, built at `2.82 crore, will serve 11,130 people, with an additional 10,000 benefiting post-inauguration. The 2.5-ML Sports Park reservoir in Alkapuri, costing `3.34 crore, will supply water to Alkapuri Township Colony, Neknampur and Narsingi village, benefiting over 9,000 more residents.

“With Hyderabad expanding rapidly and groundwater levels declining, the water demand has surged. Earlier, panchayats managed a limited number of houses, but new communities now match or exceed those figures, making water supply challenging, especially in summer. To address this, HMWS&SB is developing a robust infrastructure. The newly built filter beds will cater to an additional 50,000 to 1 lakh people, ensuring sustainable supply beyond the summer months,” said board managing director Ashok Reddy.
