Aga Khan’s legacy lives on in Hyderabad

Hyderabad:Prince Karim Aga Khan, a global leader celebrated for his contributions to education, heritage conservation and cultural development, leaves behind a rich legacy in Hyderabad. His lasting influence is seen in many of Hyderabad’s landmarks, including the famous Qutb Shahi tombs and the establishment of the Aga Khan Academy. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to social development in India, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian honor, in 2015.

Revanth Reddy recalled Aga Khan’s contributions and expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Aga Khan IV, the spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims. The Chief Minister praised Aga Khan’s contributions through the Aga Khan Foundation in establishing hospitals, educational and cultural institutions worldwide, including commendable efforts in Hyderabad. He extended his deepest condolences to Aga Khan’s family and followers.

Aga Khan’s impact on Hyderabad is most visibly seen in the restoration of the Qutb Shahi tombs. The Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), started in 1988, teamed up with the Telangana government to preserve the site’s architectural grandeur. Launched in 2013, the project repaired the buildings, refreshed the gardens and brought back traditional craft techniques. The project has involved 70 different structures, including 40 tombs, 23 mosques, five step wells and a bathing area.

“Mr Aga Khan put up several laudable efforts to enhance the heritage status of Hyderabad on the global map. His decades-long endeavours in restoration works have facelifted the unique Qutb Shahi tombs in Hyderabad, paving the way for them to compete for World Heritage status,” said Dr. Satyanarayana, a historian. Satyanarayana also stated that Aga Khan inspired subsequent organisations, such as the Deccan Heritage Foundation, to work on the heritage cause. “Today, the tombs are not only a symbol of history but also a place where locals and tourists can connect with Hyderabad’s rich past,” he explained.

Aga Khan also believed in the power of education. This vision led to the creation of the Aga Khan Academy in 2011, which offers a world-class education to students from various backgrounds. “The Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad is one of the premier schools in the country, a true center of excellence where many children receive a world-class education. Many of our students benefit directly from His Highness’ vision, as several receive scholarships and financial support. This support truly reflects the vision of the Aga Khan,” said Arjun Puri, dean of Aga Khan Academy.

His love for culture didn’t stop at buildings and classrooms. The AKTC has also supported music education and cultural exchange programs throughout India, including Hyderabad, reaching out to around 40,000 musicians and teachers. Aga Khan’s connection to Hyderabad was personal, too. He visited the city twice, first in 2006 and again in 2011, to see the progress of these projects and to meet with local leaders, educators and community members.

“Under the Aga Khan Education Service, there are three schools, in Hyderabad, Warangal and Adilabad, and a residential facility in Kompally. They not only offer quality IB education but also reach out to government schools in the Maheshwaram district with teacher training and language development programs,” said Dr Sujatha, principal of Diamond Jubilee High School managed by Aga Khan Education Services.

“The restored Qutb Shahi tombs, the innovative Aga Khan Academy and his broad initiatives in cultural and urban development all stand as testaments to his visionary approach. Though he is no longer with us, his impact on Hyderabad will continue to be felt for generations to come,” she added.
