The 20-year-old accused was battling bipolar disorder and reportedly had an addiction to video games
In a horrific incident in Visakhapatnam, a 20-year-old man allegedly killed his mother because she stopped him from playing online games.
On January 30, at around 4 pm, the victim asked her son to stop playing online games. Enraged, the son allegedly stabbed his mother to death. The incident occurred while his father, a Commandant in the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), was posted in Odisha. The son then locked his mother’s body in a room and fled from the scene.
The incident came to light when Alka Singh’s younger son, Ayushman, returned home. He discovered his mother’s body and immediately alerted neighbours and the police. Malkapuram police initiated an investigation, which gradually uncovered the truth.
After initial investigation, the accused, Anmol Singh, a third-year engineering student, might be suffering from a mental health condition. Police said that Singh had bipolar disorder, a condition characterised by extreme mood swings and unpredictable behaviour. He was reportedly addicted to online games. When his mother confiscated his mobile phone and laptop to stop him from playing, he allegedly killed her in a fit of rage.
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition marked by significant shifts in mood, energy levels, and activity levels. Individuals with bipolar disorder experience episodes of extreme highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). These episodes can manifest as irritability, impulsivity, and difficulty controlling emotions. Anmol Singh reportedly struggled with this condition.
The police have sent the body for a post-mortem examination and recovered the alleged murder weapon. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to gather more evidence and information to establish a clearer picture of the events leading up to the tragedy.
