Day temperature rise in Andhra Pradesh, mercury hovers between 34°C and 38°C

VISAKHAPATNAM: After more than one month of winter and below normal temperatures, parts of Andhra Pradesh (coastal as well as Rayalaseema districts) are witnessing a shift in weather conditions, with maximum day temperatures rising and hovering between 34 degrees Celsius and 38°C.
Winter is on its way out in Andhra Pradesh, many parts of which have begun to witness a rise in mercury. On Wednesday (Feb 5), at least 10 places in the state reported above 35°C temperature marking the gradual onset of summer.
Nandigama town in NTR district was the hottest at 38.4 degree Celsius on Feb 5 followed by Kurnool (37.3°C), Amaravati (36.5°C), Anantapur (36.1°C), Nandyal (36°C), Jangamaheswarapuram (35.8°C ), Machilipatnam (35.4°C), Kavali (35.4°C) and Gannavaram (35°C). Visakhapatnam (Airport locality) recorded 33.8 °C on Feb 5.
“Parts of the state are witnessing a rise in temperature due to absence of moisture. Maximum temperatures are likely to be above normal by 2-4 °C over north coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, south coastal Andhra Pradesh on Friday (Feb 7) while the maximum temperatures are likely to be above normal by 2-3 °C over Rayalaseema on Friday. Shallow fog likely at isolated pockets over coastal Andhra Pradesh, ”said Dr S Karuna Sagar, scientist at IMD-Amaravati.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast that minimum temperatures in February are expected to be above normal in most parts of the state. The higher and normal temperatures along with below normal rain may adversely impact the standing horticulture and agriculture crops in parts of the state.
“Though the mornings remain pleasant with shallow fog, we have been experiencing hot afternoons for the past few days. It seems to be early summer this year as summer-like conditions prevailed in the first week of February,” said D Sudhakar, a resident of Vizag city.
As per the IMD’s the winter season in the state is from December to February, but the AP is witnessing rise in mercury level for the past few days. Chintapalle in Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) district, which has emerged as Andhra’s Kashmir for its cool weather condition, has recorded single digit minimum temperatures in some days of January 2025, has been recording 12 to 15 degree Celsius minimum temperatures for the past few days, indicating that mercury levels are gradually increasing in the tribal pockets of the state.
