The Andhra Pradesh government has expedited the process of setting up the High Court Bench in Kurnool and identified buildings to accommodate 15 Judges.
According to official sources, the Kurnool district administration has narrowed down its search to four places in and around Kurnool city and the Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) building at Dinnedevarapadu is said to have been identified as the best option as it is close to Kurnool city.
The district administration has reportedly inspected four buildings —Cluster University, APERC building, and a private college and a private residential school —all within 10 km to 15 km from Kurnool city. With the government planning to shift the APERC building to Amaravati, the building is likely to be chosen to house the High Court Bench.
It may be recalled that the State Assembly, in November 2024, passed a unanimous resolution for setting up of the High Court Bench in Kurnool.
On January 29 this year, Registrar (Vigilance) V. Sreenivasa Siva Ram wrote to the Kurnool district Collector to furnish information on ‘the availability of infrastructure facilities for 15 High Court Judges, court complex, courtrooms, staff rooms, accommodation for advocates and residential accommodation for the Judges and court staff, and facilities available for advocates.’
The Collector asked the Roads and Buildings Superintending Engineer, Kurnool Municipal Commissioner and the Kurnool Revenue Divisional Officer to submit a report on the availability of the facilities by January 30. The RDO was also requested to identify the vacant government land for the purpose and submit a report.
After submission of the reports, a team of officials of the High Court will visit Kurnool to inspect the buildings identified by the district administration.
