AP govt decides to shift KRMB office in Hyd to Vij | Vijayawada News

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh govt has decided to shift the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) office to Vijayawada from Hyderabad. KRMB authorities have been asked to prepare for the shift as per the provisions of AP Reorganiation Act.
The relocation of KRMB office from Hyderabad to AP has been hanging in the balance for the past decade. While the previous TDP govt (2014-19) wanted to shift it to Vijayawada, YSRCP govt (2019-24) proposed to take it to Visakhapatnam. Some farmers’ associations have been demanding to shift the KRMB office to Kurnool.
Special chief secretary (water resources) G Sai Prasad is said to have informed KRMB member secretary D M Raipure that govt wants the board to start operating from Vijayawada without further delay, for which suitable accommodation would be provided in the city. In fact, the previous TDP govt had even identified a building in Vijayawada for the shift in 2018. But before it could happen, there was regime change in the state following the 2019 elections. And before the subsequent YSRCP govt could shift the office to Visakhapatnam, govt changed again.
Meanwhile, Rayalaseema farmers have stepped up their demands to shift the KRMB office to Kurnool, stating that it is the right location and is on Krishna river bank. They say it would offer them an opportunity to meet KRMB officials directly to appraise the facts about injustice being meted out to the region.
The previous YSRCP govt had decided to shift some judicial offices like APERC, Lok Ayukta, and tribunals to Kurnool, but preferred Visakhapatnam as the location for the KRMB office, despite the opposition by Rayalaseema farmers who said Visakhapatnam is not in the Krishna river basin and there is no point in moving the office to the port city. Eight months after coming to power, the TDP-led NDA alliance govt in the state has now taken the decision to shift the KRMB office to Vijayawada.
Sources said Sai Prasad also raised his objection to Telangana’s demand to set up telemetry devices on irrigation installations in AP. He said AP accepted Telangana’s demand for two-level installations as they were inter-state distributories, and there is no need to install the devises on projects located in AP. He also made it clear that it is AP’s prerogative to utilise the waters from one project to another project within the state and other states can’t question it. AP also rejected Telangana’s demand to withdraw CRPF security at Nagarjuna Sagar right canal.
