‘Everyone is peaking at the right time’: Tony de Zorzi as Sunrisers Eastern Cape enter third consecutive SA20 final | Cricket News

Tony de Zorzi and Jordan Hermann delivered stellar performances to guide the Sunrisers Eastern Cape into their third successive SA20 finalkeeping their title-winning streak alive. De Zorzi, a late addition to the squad as a replacement for the injured Patrick Kruger, played a match-winning knock at Centurion, showcasing his class on the big stage.
The Proteas batter demonstrated his international pedigree with a dazzling 78 off 49 balls, including 11 boundaries and two sixes, helping Sunrisers chase down the Royals’ total of 175/4 with ease, securing an eight-wicket victory.

Reflecting on his unexpected call-up, De Zorzi said, “I was training at Province with one eye on the Champions Trophy, but on that particular day, I was at Boulders Beach watching penguins. When coach phoned me, I was ecstatic. I didn’t think I would get a chance, but I am grateful to Aiden and Eddie for believing in me. I’m happy I was able to repay that trust.”
On his role as an opening batter in T20s, De Zorzi acknowledged the challenges, stating, “We don’t play many T20 games, so you need time to find your rhythm. Marco kept reminding me to stay aggressive, which helped. We just focused on imposing ourselves and capitalising on opportunities.”

As the Sunrisers prepare for their third consecutive final, De Zorzi praised the leadership of Aiden Markram and head coach Adrian Birrell. “Aiden and Eddie have a very cool relationship. They are calm under pressure, and the team feeds off their energy. There is genuine support for each other in the squad, making it a unique environment.”
Looking ahead to the final against MI Cape TownDe Zorzi noted the strength of their opposition but expressed confidence in his team. “MICT is a strong side, but Aiden reminded us that the tournament starts now. Everyone in our squad seems to be peaking at the right time. I wouldn’t want to be facing Jansen, Gleeson and Overton with the new ball. It’s going to be an exciting final, and hopefully, Wanderers will be packed.”
Meanwhile, PAARL ROSS captain David Miller reflected on their exit from the tournament. “It’s disappointing to bow out at this stage. We had a strong campaign, but in T20 cricketsmall margins make a big difference. We lost our way in the last two group games, which cost us. The guys gave their 100%, but unfortunately, we couldn’t maintain momentum when it mattered.”
Miller also commented on the team’s struggles away from home. “We had an adaptable squad, but we found our groove at home. When it really counted at the back end, we didn’t give ourselves the best chance to compete. Still, I’m proud of the squad, especially the younger players who stepped up.”
Looking ahead to the next season, Miller admitted changes are likely. “We’ve progressed further than in previous seasons, but we’ll need to reassess. With the expected player releases, we’ll look at adding experience and X-factor players to strengthen the squad.”
As Sunrisers gear up for another shot at the title, all eyes will be on their final clash against MI Cape Town at Wanderers.
