The Q8 has a smooth and versatile 3.0L TFSI V6 engine mated to fast 8-speed transmission and AWD
BHPian Ripcord09 recently shared this with other enthusiasts:
2024 Audi Q8
What you’ll like:
⢠Stylish and unique looks; for someone who wants to stand out from the crowd
⢠Priced between the pre-facelift variants, with a good mix of features from both the variants
⢠Smooth and versatile 3.0L TFSI V6 engine mated to fast 8-speed transmission and AWD
⢠Practical to live with despite the coupe styling
What you won’t:
⢠Air suspension, which is needed in a premium offering such as this, has been removed
⢠Some differentiation features like top-of-the-line audio and high-end seats missing
⢠For the price, a customer may think about a Cayenne Coupe, which is priced at 25 lakhs more
⢠Interiors feel too similar across the Audi range
Mercedes-Benz GLE
BMW X5
Lexus RX
Porsche Macan
Here’s what Bhpian Dicky replied:
Heart says GLE 450d. In solid white with beige interiors. It comes with the Airmatic suspension right?
But when it comes to writing the cheque, may chicken out and buy an RX500h. In a fancy blue or pearl white with maroon or red or beige interiors and wood trim, not the aluminium coloured ones.
Here’s what BHPian Sensible_Speed replied:
X5 is the benchmark for this segment. Fantastic ride and handling and a sprightly pair of engines make this the perfect do it all vehicle for the large-ish family. Don’t think anyone else has managed to close in on the X5 yet. Audi might be able to steal a few sensible shoppers away with their cut-throat pricing. Jeep might snag a couple of left-field buyers with their Grand Cherokee.
Here’s what BHPian abaliga replied:
Voted for the GLE.
X5
- X5 is the driver’s choice in this segment, amazing 40i engine as well
- Back seat on X5 falls short for a car of this size
GLE
- Spacious back seat and powered rear seats and curtains
- Lacks Sport Mode despite the presence of Air Suspension on the 450 and 450d
- Engines are very close to BMW on performance
- Like the design of the facelift better than the BMW
Considering the above, I would buy the GLE 450! Note that I have not driven both of these and my opinions are based on online reviews

A couple of months ago, I was in the exact same dilemma, torn between the BMW X5 40i, Mercedes GLE, Land Rover Defender, and Audi Q8/7. After test-driving them all, I finally brought home a 2024 BMW X5 40i in stunning black colour.
Just hours after taking delivery, we set off on a 7,200 km adventure from Kerala to Kashmir and back. And oh boy, what a journey it was! The B58 engine never failed to put a grin on my faceâevery growl, every pull, every downshift was pure joy.
Now, about the back seatâsure, itâs not as plush as the GLEâs, but itâs far from uncomfortable. My three-year-old son slept peacefully through most of the trip, which says a lot. In fact, after covering such an insane distance, my wife and I hopped on our scooty for a quick ride minutes after reaching home. Not once did the trip feel exhausting.
The only thing that kept me on the edge was the low-profile run-flat tires. I was constantly worried about hitting a nasty pothole and damaging those beautiful alloys. But thankfully, the X5 held up like a champ.
So my recommendation would be, if you like driving and enjoy spending time behind the wheel, BMW X5 all the way. Alternatively, if you like being chauffeured and enjoy time at the back seat go for the GLE. You cant go wrong with both.

This is a two car toss up for me between the GLE petrol and the X5 petrol.
Voted for Petrol X5 40igrudgingly accepting their inferior back seat compared to the GLE. The GLE would be a close second for me and will nudge ahead in the purchase if I pick better back seat comfort over the superior driving experience when time comes to pull the trigger.
What swings it for X5 are just two factors:
- Better driving dynamics and driving experience compared to the GLE.
- My perception of better longevity and peace of mind of long term ownership of BMW vs Mercedes. This is just a perception.
- I feel BMW will also throw up lesser niggles than the Mercedes. Again, just my perception.
Macan: underpowered and just way too small for my needs and liking
Q8: Averse to brand Audi and more importantly, its just too long in the tooth. Its fast but somehow neither outright thrilling to drive (by 6 cylinder petrol standards) and the interiors are just unacceptably dated. PS: That’s me driving the Q8 in the opening post for Akshay1234’s review.
Lexus: Too meh on the engine specs compared to the competition.
