Eluru District Collector K. Vetriselvi on Friday (January 10) stressed the need for cracking down on rooster fights, gambling and betting in the district.
During a meeting here, the District Collector said the authorities’ actions should instil fear in anyone who attempts to organise rooster fights.
Officials have to keep an eye out for rooster fights, gambling, betting and illegal liquor transport. Both organising and participating in rooster fights are an offence. Special focus should be given to monitoring the organisers of rooster fights. Legal action must be taken under the A.P. Gambling Act, 1974, against anyone involved in rooster fights, she said.
Joint inspection teams have already been formed at mandal level, following the orders of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. She said the teams must identify locations where rooster fights are being planned and take necessary action.
Rooster fight arenas should be dismantled using earthmovers by invoking the Section 163 of the BNSS. Additionally, any funds collected for organising cockfights or betting should be confiscated by the joint inspection teams, which have the authority to do so, she said.
The Collector also ordered tahsildars to establish supervision committees in villages. FIRs must be registered immediately against those involved in organising cockfights or gambling.
She warned that attaching knives or blades to the legs of roosters or throwing them into the air is prohibited. Tahsildars and SHOs must organise village-level meetings to apprise the public of the laws that make rooster fights and betting illegal, she added.
