Sixth sense or a sheer luck or just the virtue of a defensive driving!
The incident happened last evening when I was returning from Faridabad and driving on outer ring road near Nehru Enclave.
A 3-lane road with moderate traffic (being a Sunday).
Two trucks running in parallel, one on the left lane, one on the right lane. The space in the middle lane between the two trucks was empty. However, there was a cab in middle lane just ahead of the trucks. I was waiting for it to gain some distance so that I can speed through the middle lane and overtake both the trucks.
I was occupied in work entire day and was tired at this point. The cab took its own sweet time (~20 seconds) to create enough distance for me to overtake the trucks.
I grew a little impatient at this point. As soon as I saw the opportunity, I was about to floor the accelerator, let 1.5 turbo show it’s magic and zoom past the trucks.
But….
Something inside me told me NOT to. More like when we talk to ourselves (a Google search says that it’s called Soliloquy) and it went like “aah! let it go.” and I continued with the same speed behind the two trucks in the middle lane.
Soon after that the truck on the left lane suddenly swerved to the middle lane. Turns out that an auto rickshaw came out of a small lane on the left and instead of taking a left, it took a right turn and started driving in the wrong direction, facing the truck on the left. That truck driver turned sharply to the middle lane to avoid a possible collision with the auto.
Had I been overtaking in the middle lane, high chances that the truck would have hit me on the left.
I thanked the inner myself and continued with the rest of the drive.
“Jo hota hai, ache ke liye hota hai” (whatever happens, happens for the good).
