The people of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) limits, including Anakapalli, Bheemili, and Visakhapatnam, were greatly inconvenienced on Sunday as mercury levels rose beyond normal. While Waltair registered a maximum temperature of 32.2 degrees Celsius, Visakhapatnam Airport recorded 31.2C.
Most of the areas registered 1C to 2C above normal maximum temperatures in the last 24 hours, according to the officials.
While Koduru in Anakapalli district registered 34.5C, Maharanipeta recorded 30C, Gopalapatnam, 32C and Akkireddipalem recorded the city’s highest temperature of 34.5C followed by Gajuwaka and Bheemili at 32.3C. Pendurthi registered the city’s lowest minimum temperature of 20.9C, according to AP State Development Planning Society’s statistical data.
Speaking to The Hindu, Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited executive engineer for the Madhurawada zone Polaki Srinivasa Rao said, “Power consumption has also started increasing in the past few days due to the rising temperatures in the city. We are also providing uninterrupted power supply to the consumers.”
As per the India Meteorological Department’s calculations, summertime officially begins on March 1 and ends on May 31, with the onset of the southwest monsoon in June.
According to IMD Director (Amaravati) S. Stella, maximum temperatures are likely to be above normal by 2C to 4C over the north coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and South coastal Andhra Pradesh, and 2C to 3C over Rayalaseema region till February 11.
