Eluru: Velamati Chandrasekhar Janardhana Rao, founder and head of Veljan Group of Industries, was brutally stabbed to death by his grandson in Hyderabad. He hailed from Eluru district and was known for his generous contributions to various charitable causes.
Rao made massive donations, including Rs 40 crore to establish cancer and cardiology centers at Eluru Government Hospital. He also donated Rs 2 crore to Sir C.R. Reddy College in Eluru for setting up a technology center 19 years ago. Additionally, he contributed Rs 40 crore to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) in phased installments.
As a philanthropist, Velamati’s generosity extended to his native village of Kovvali, Denduluru Mandal, where he funded modern labs, new furniture, and building constructions for the local school. Born on June 28, 1939, in Kovvali, he was one of the first-generation industrialists in India. After completing his engineering degree, he began his career at Hindu Motors in Kolkata before establishing Veljan Industries in Patancheru, Hyderabad. Despite his immense success, he remained humble throughout his life and became a notable philanthropist.
He also donated Rs 10 crore to L.V. Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, where he constructed a block in honour of his mother. His legacy is marked by his deep commitment to supporting education, healthcare, and social welfare.
