Hyderabad: The draft voter list from the state election commission indicates that women comprise 51% of the total voter population, which stands at 1.67 crore, translating to 85.28 lakh female voters. The state is divided into 538 mandals and encompasses 12,848 panchayats, along with 5,817 MPTCs and 570 ZPTCs.
Initially, it was anticipated that 12,867 panchayats would participate in the elections; however, this number has been revised to 1,13,722 wards set to be contested. While no definitive date has been established for the elections, they will occur only after the dedicated BC commission submits its report regarding reservations. During internal discussions, Congress leaders urged the chief minister, Revanth Reddy, to proceed with the MPTC and ZPTC elections, which will be conducted on a party basis, and then organise sarpanch elections that will not follow party lines.
TPCC chief Mahesh Kumar Goud also indicated a potential plan to conduct the elections in multiple phases. The Congress remains optimistic about securing a majority, particularly due to the support of women voters. A senior Congress leader noted, “Every month, 30 lakh zero tickets are issued by RTC as part of the free bus travel scheme, which has significantly increased women’s mobility for personal, work, and business purposes. This initiative has provided them with greater freedom and financial savings, and we anticipate that women will support Congress.”
Nalgonda district has the highest number of panchayats at 833, followed by Sangareddy with 868.
