Hyderabad: Starting tomorrow (February 11), dry weather conditions will prevail in Hyderabad, with temperatures expected to rise by 2-3°C over the next few days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The rise in temperatures is part of a larger trend, with Hyderabad and Telangana bracing for an intense summer in the coming months.
Possible Heatwave Conditions Similar to 2017
March and April are expected to witness severe temperatures, similar to the summer of 2017.
In 2017, some locations in Telangana recorded maximum temperatures of up to 47°C, with 23 heatwave days and over 108 reported deaths due to heat strokes, according to the IMD.
Independent weather forecaster and enthusiast T. Balaji, popularly known as Telangana weatherman on X (formerly twitter) has predicted that 2025 could follow a similar trend, with prolonged heatwave conditions expected across the region.
Speaking to Newsmeter, IMD Meteorologist K. S. Sridhar highlighted the seriousness of the situation, stating, “The recurrence of heatwaves in Telangana is largely due to persistent high-pressure systems that inhibit cloud formation and trap heat near the surface. With temperatures already expected to be above normal, we could see extended periods of extreme heat similar to 2017.”
Impact of ENSO on Monsoon
Balaji emphasized the link between a strong summer and a good monsoon, citing the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon.
ENSO influences global weather patterns, with El Niño leading to warmer ocean temperatures and extreme weather, while La Niña brings cooler conditions. A neutral ENSO phase, as expected this year, generally results in normal monsoon rainfall for India.
“To receive good monsoon rains, we need a strong summer. ENSO is expected to be neutral during the monsoon season this year,” Balaji said on X (formerly Twitter).
Echoing this, K. S. Sridhar added, “ENSO plays a crucial role in determining monsoon behavior. While a neutral ENSO phase is typically favorable for normal rainfall, we must also consider the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) for a complete picture of the monsoon outlook.”
Weather Forecast for Hyderabad
For Hyderabad and its surrounding areas, the IMD has predicted:
• Next 24 Hours: Partly cloudy skies, mist or haze in the morning, with temperatures around 33°C (max) and 20°C (min).
• Next 48 Hours: Similar conditions, with temperatures rising to 34°C (max) and 21°C (min).
Precautionary Measures
With rising temperatures, residents are advised to:
• Stay hydrated and avoid prolonged sun exposure.
• Wear light, breathable clothing.
• Take precautions against heat-related illnesses like heat strokes and dehydration.
Authorities are expected to issue further advisories as heat progresses.
