Manufacturing of LHB, EMU coaches in Kazipet rail coach factory likely to start in December

Production of a variety of modern railway stock, including LHB and EMU coaches, in the rail coach factory at Kazipet is likely to commence by this year-end.

The Railway Board has announced its decision to upgrade the wagon periodic overhauling workshop at Kazipet to railway manufacturing unit and instructions were issued to the South Central Railway and the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited accordingly. The board said that 800 coaches will be manufactured in the new facility and sought an additional 1.1 acre land for turnaround.

The issue figured in the recent meeting convened by the Ministry of Home Affairs to review the progress of infrastructure works assured to Telangana as part of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.

The Telangana government lamented that instead of setting up of a rail coach factory as assured in the Reorganisation Act, the Railway Ministry proposed to set up wagon periodical overhauling workshop. The Railway Ministry however clarified that a railway manufacturing unit capable of manufacturing and maintaining a variety of modern railway stocks is being developed in Kazipet.

In order to expedite the work, SCR and RVNL are advised to first work out and plan to develop facilities for manufacturing LHB and EMU coaches from the unit, Railway Board representative informed Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan at the meeting.

Interestingly, the Board has addressed communication to the SCR as well as Telangana’s resident commissioner in New Delhi Gaurav Uppal about the decision to upgrade the POH workshop into a railway manufacturing unit in September last year itself informing him that the project had been entrusted to the RVNL.
