Hyderabad: Amid the transition from winter to summer, the city is reporting a significant spike in viral and bacterial infections, with medical professionals reporting a surge in cases of cold, cough, and fever. While most cases are routine, doctors note that nearly half the reported infections are attributed to ‘Mycoplasma pneumoniae‘, alongside streptococcal bacterial infections, scarlet fever, and an increase in chickenpox cases among children.
“We saw an influx of flu cases, with a notable increase in fever, cold, and upper respiratory tract infections. What’s concerning is that patients are taking longer than usual to recover,” Dr Chandra Priyanka, general physician at KIMS Hospital, Gachibowli, said.
Dr Sivaranjani Santosh, a paediatrician, highlighted the severity of current cases. “About 40% of cases we’re seeing are due to ‘Mycoplasma pneumoniae’. The situation is further complicated by the prevalence of rhinoviruses, pasrainfluenza, and scarlet fever. We’re also noting a significant number of chickenpox cases among children,” she added.
The flu phase, which began in Dec last week, reached its peak and was expected to decline in coming days. However, healthcare facilities continue to see a steady stream of patients.
Dr Chava Anjaneyulu, ENT specialist at Asian ENT Care, Panjagutta, reported a surge in cases.
“We’re seeing more patients with viral rhinitis and pharyngitis. The symptoms include throat pain, cough, body aches, and fever,” he says.
