District Collector and in-charge GVMC Commissioner M.N. Harendhira Prasad has emphasised on the goal of transforming Visakhapatnam into a garbage-free city. Following the State government’s directives, he took part in an awareness programme on waste segregation and organic composting at the RRR Centre premises in Yendada, as part of the ‘Swarna Andhra – Swachh Andhra’ initiative, on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Harendhira Prasad urged citizens not to dump household wastes into drains or public places but to segregate them into wet, dry, and hazardous categories and hand them over to the sanitation staff. He encouraged residents to prepare organic compost from wet waste at home and use it for growing vegetables, fruits and flowers in terrace gardens and community gardens. This not only brings financial benefits but also promotes a healthy environment and lifestyle, he said.
‘Shun single-use plastic items’
He appealed to the public to completely avoid single-use plastic items and switch to eco-friendly alternatives. The Collector also stressed the importance of residential welfare associations, SHG women members, and RPs supporting the waste recycling process. He also urged everyone to follow and promote the ‘Swarna Andhra – Swachh Andhra’ initiatives throughout the month to raise awareness and contribute to the development of a clean Visakhapatnam.
Later, the Collector inspected a demonstration on the segregation of wet, dry and hazardous waste and the organic composting process. He also participated in a rally holding placards and took the ‘Swarna Andhra – Swachh Andhra’ pledge.
Additional Commissioners D.V. Ramana Murthy and S.S. Varma, Chief Medical Officer E.N.V. Naresh Kumar and others were present.
