Nampally railway station to be razed soon

Hyderabad: Fresh from razing the Secunderabad railway station, Indian Railways, as part of its modernisation programme in the state, is set to embark on a similar exercise and raze the historic ‘Hyderabad Deccan’ station at Nampally, in the next few months.

The station has been identified for redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station scheme. The upgrading works, which have commenced, are to cost Rs 309 crore.

A senior railway official explained, “The main building is in a bad state and the slab chips are falling frequently, which spells danger. The station has an everyday footfall of 40, 000 people. Redevelopment of Hyderabad station will include housing world-class amenities and facilities that can cater to the needs of the increasing footfall.”

The landmark station was built in 1907 by Osman Ali Khan. The demolition decision will dismay old-timers and those who have fond memories of Nampally station, as it is popularly called.

Its historical relevance can be gauged by the reactions during the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebration in July 2022. Freedom fighters, especially invited for the function, recalled about the days when they took trains from this station during the freedom movement.
