Preventive measures to curb bird flu in Kurnool, Nandyal

Kurnool: The district administration has implemented measures to prevent the spread of bird flu after a recent outbreak in Kurnool city. A few days ago, ducks belonging to Besta Raju, a resident of Narasimharao Pet, died due to the disease. On February 4, 15 of his ducks perished, and samples were sent to a laboratory in Bhopal. When one tested positive for bird flu, officials promptly culled the remaining ducks in a scientific manner and buried them. The area was subsequently declared a red alert zone.

Rapid response teams, comprising veterinary officers, veterinarians, and other staff, have been deployed. A total of 35 teams have been formed—14 in the Kurnool division and 21 in the Adoni division. Meanwhile, officials from the animal husbandry department in Nandyal, Allagadda, and the Nandyal district headquarters have also been put on high alert, with over 30 inspection teams in place.

Special teams are inspecting poultry farms and implementing precautionary measures to contain the outbreak. Residents have been advised against bringing chickens from other areas for the next two months, and poultry farms are being sanitised with anti-virus sprays. Authorities have intensified surveillance at check posts to prevent the transportation of chickens, chicks, eggs, and ducks from other states.

“The sale and purchase of chicken and eggs have been suspended in the Narasimharao Pet area. We have also urged the public to take necessary precautions. If chicken and eggs are cooked at 100°C, there is no risk of bird flu infection,” said Dr G. Srinivas, an officer at the Kurnool district animal husbandry department.
