The Road Safety Month celebrations organised by APSRTC concluded at Maddilapalem RTC Depot on Friday.
Police Commissioner Shankabratha Bagchi, who participated as chief guest, called upon the corporation’s drivers to give priority to safety while on duty by adhering to traffic rules. Buses should be stopped close to the road margins at bus bays to prevent hindrance to traffic. They should avoid unnecessary honking, and use the horn only when necessary, he said, advising drivers to undergo periodical physical and mental health checkups apart from eye tests to minimise accidents.
The Police Commissioner appreciated the reduction in accident rate in APSRTC this year compared to last year, and called upon drivers to not only be fit, but also understand the behaviour of other road users to prevent accidents. He assured the drivers that the police personnel would always be ready to help them when they face any issues on the road. He shared his personal mobile number with them so that they could contact him in case of any difficulty.
Deputy Transport Commissioner RC Srinivasa Rao, who participated as guest of honour, attributed the low accident rate of APSRTC buses to the rigorous training given to drivers. He called upon the drivers to hone their driving skills in tune with the changing technologies being adopted by bus manufacturers.
B. Mohan Venkataram of Andhra University hailed the APSRTC drivers for achieving a low accident rate in a dense traffic city like Visakhapatnam.
