The city has reported six cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) as on Saturday. While five are undergoing treatment at King George Hospital (KGH), another person was admitted to a private hospital, as per the Medical & Health Department authorities.
KGH Superintendent Sivananda said that among the five patients undergoing treatment, four are aged around 30 years, while another person is around 60 years. He said that the condition of all the patients is stable and there is no need to worry.
He said that in general, GBS cases are reported every month and these new cases were admitted in the same ward. “There is no specific age category which is affected by GBS. Sometimes, we see such cases among children too,” he added.
District Medical & Health Officer P. Jagadeeswara Rao ruled out the apprehensions over the GBS and said that there is no need for the people to panic about it. “GBS has been present since my MBBS days, it is not some new medical case,” he said. “The symptoms include numbness in the legs, weakness which spreads entire body, fever etc. If people detect such symptoms early, they should approach the doctors. Through proper medication, it can be cured,” he added.
