Huge wastage of water in some and zero supply in several colonies

Hyderabad: Even as several localities in the city are struggling with inexplicable water shortage, thousands of litres are being wasted due to unattended leaks and broken pipelines, elsewhere. People are ridiculing the inept handling of water supply and are questioning the apathy of the authorities when people in many areas are being denied supply of water for days together.

S. Surrendra raised concerns over a water pipeline leakage near Miyapur metro station on the Mayuri nagar side, which has been flowing unchecked for the past few days.

“Despite repeated complaints, the issue remains unresolved. Thousands of litres of water are being wasted on the road while people living in many areas are bearing the brunt of acute water shortage,” he said Surrendra.

It has been a similar take at Rajiv nagar x road near Moti nagar.

“This wastage has been going on for years. No sooner is a leak fixed as a temporary arrangement, another leak starts. We get water only twice a week, yet lakhs of litres are being wasted. It’s disappointing,” Arif said in an X post.

There are complaints of heavy leak of drinking water near Al Shifa Medical, Goshamahal and Karwan, Yousuf Nagar, near Milan Bakery.

“There have been so many complaints on this issue. Yet nothing has been done to stop the wastage. Water is being wasted near Al Shifa Medical for the last four months,” said Mohammed Musher.

Meanwhile, in areas like Gayatri nagar, Godavari Homes, people have been struggling without water for the last 10 days.

“The authorities need to take strict action,” said Ramesh. B from Gayatri nagar.

“Drinking water is flowing onto the road in front of Vididhi staff quarters close to Basavatharakam Hospital”, posted Krishna Chaitanya on X.

Similarly, there has been a leakage near NGRI metro station for the last two days, causing inconvenience to commuters and residents.

Meanwhile, a HMWSSB official said that they were actively addressing the issues.

“We are aware of leakages in various areas and are working on rectifying them. Our teams are on the ground to resolve the issues at the earliest to prevent further wastage,” the official said.

The official indicated that the board will soon introduce new methods to minimise water wastage at filling stations. “Currently, many filling stations operate manually, leading to unnecessary water loss. We are planning to introduce sensor-based systems that will automatically stop the flow once the water is filled to capacity.”
