100 acres to be acquired for Vizag metro rail project

Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh govt has provided details regarding the acquisition of 99.8 acres of land for the Vizag metro rail project. Of this, nearly nine acres are privately owned, while the remaining land is held by various central and state govt institutions and depts.
Visakhapatnam district officials have formed a committee to identify the specific land required for the project. Of the total land, approximately 47 acres belong to the state govt, 36 acres belong to Vizag port, four acres to railways, three acres to central govt, and nine acres are privately owned. The land acquisition alone is estimated to cost about Rs 882 crore. The state govt recently approved phase one of the proposed Visakhapatnam metro rail project, which will cover approximately 46.23 kilometres.
The 46.23km network will feature 42 metro stations. While most stations will be developed on govt land, some private land may be required to create various amenities. The first phase of the project will consist of three corridors — Vizag Steel Plant junction to Kommadi (34.4 km), Gurudwara to Old Post Office (5.08 km), and Thatichetlapalem to Chinna Waltair (6.75 km). As the corridor between VSP junction and Kommadi will be developed along the national highway in a double-decker model, it is expected to require minimal private land. However, the city corridor, such as the Thatichetlapalem to Chinna Waltair route, where seven stations will be developed, may require additional private land due to the limited availability of govt land in the area.
The revised cost estimates for this phase, based on 2024 prices, stands at Rs 11,498 crore. Phase two of the project will add a fourth corridor, running from Kommadi to Bhogapuram, which will be developed after the Bhogapuram airport becomes operational.
Tenders for Visakhapatnam metro were originally scheduled to be finalised before the 2019 elections. However, due to the election code, the then TDP govt in the state postponed the announcement of successful bidder. When the YSRCP govt assumed office in 2019, it retracted the earlier tenders and expanded the scope of the project to include additional areas. However, little progress was made during its five-year tenure.
After the TDP-led NDA alliance returned to power in 2024, the govt revised the cost estimates to reflect current market prices. Being part of the NDA govt at the Centre, the state govt is now pushing for 100% funding from the Union govt for the metro project. Tenders will be issued once the project receives approval from the Centre.
