Delhi Earthquake: The intensity of earthquakes in Delhi-NCR was low, so why did you feel so fast, what is the reason?

Delhi NCR woke up with a strong tremor of the earthquake at 536 am. People came out of their homes hurriedly. Dhaula Kuan in Delhi was the center of earthquake. The National Earthquake Science Center reported that the depth of the earthquake was five kilometers. The shocks were felt in many areas of the National Capital Region (NCR) including Delhi Noida Indirapuram. There is no news of any kind of damage from the earthquake yet.

Digital Desk, New Delhi. On Monday morning, Delhi NCR woke up with a sharp tremors of the earthquake. People had to leave their homes. According to the National Center for Sisamology (NCS), a 4.0 magnitude earthquake occurred at Delhi-NCR at 5:36 am on Monday. But its shocks were very fast.

Many videos are viral on social media, in which things can be seen moving with fast. There is also a discussion among the people that why such a sharp shock in such a low intensity? So let’s know the reason behind this …
Shopkeeper Anish of New Delhi railway station said that everything was shaking. Customers started shouting. Some people say that such shocks have never been felt before. The National Center for Sisamology reported that the center of the earthquake was Dhaula Kuan in Delhi.

Fast shocks due to these reasons

  • The tremors feel faster when they are the center of earthquake within the city. The reason for this is that seismic waves have to travel a short distance to reach a structure or building than the plains. This increases vibration and shocks feel very powerful.
  • The intensity of the earthquake on the reactor scale was 4.0. Earthquakes with such intensity are placed on a middle category. One of the reasons for intense tremors was that the epicenter of the earthquake was quite high. According to the National Center for Sisamology, the center of the earthquake was just 5 km below the ground. Due to the densely populated and low depth, shocks were fast.
  • Delhi is placed in the seismic region IV. Because of this, the risk of medium to powerful earthquake is always here. Experts believe that high buildings move fast due to their design. This also increases vibration. Delhi falls on active fault lines. Because of this, earthquakes occur more here.
  • The number of tall buildings in Delhi NCR is high. These tall buildings present in Ghaziabad, Noida, Delhi, Gurugram are more vibration. Actually, these buildings move more.
  • The soil of Delhi is also a reason behind the sharp tremors. The soil of some parts here is soft alluvial. This can lead to an increase in earthquake waves. This makes the shocks faster.

Delhi settled on active fault lines

Delhi is settled on Delhi-Haridwar Ridge and Mahendragarh-Dehradun Fault Line. Because of this, there is always a risk of earthquake here. Explain that a little change on the reactor scale can cause a major earthquake.

Mathematics of earthquake like this

  • The earthquake of a magnitude of 4.0 is 10 times more powerful than 3.0. It also releases 32 times more energy.
  • The earthquake of a magnitude of 5.0 produces 10 times more shock than 4.0. Energy is also 32 times more.
  • The 6.0 magnitude earthquake is one thousand times more powerful than 3.0. This earthquake produces 32 hundred times more energy.

Five big earthquakes after 1720

According to the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), the Delhi-Haridwar Ridge and the Delhi-Moradabad Fault have the ability to bring an 8.0 magnitude earthquake. According to the data, only five earthquakes of 5.5 to 6.7 magnitude were recorded in Delhi after 1720. In terms of earthquake, Delhi falls in high risk area.

Why do more earthquakes come in Delhi?

According to the National Earthquake Science Center, there are many faults in Delhi NCR. Due to being close to the Himalayas, there is always a danger of earthquake here. Around Delhi, Mahendragarh-Dehradun Fault, Moradabad Fault, Sohna Fault, Great Boundary Fault, Delhi-Sargodha Ridge, Yamuna River Rekha Rekha, Ganga River Rekha are present. Due to this, the risk of earthquake is also high.

PM appealed for peace

After the tremors of a strong earthquake in Delhi NCR, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to the people to remain calm and follow security precautions. PM Modi wrote on X that earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi and surrounding areas. Appeal to all to stay calm and follow safety precautions and to be cautious to potential shaking. Officials are keeping a close watch on the situation.
