An elderly woman, who was undergoing treatment for suspected Gullian Barre Syndrome (GBS) at the King George Hospital (KGH) died on Monday (February 17).
Sixtythree-year-old Renuka Mahanti of Mallividu village of L. Kota mandal in Vizianagaram district, was admitted to the General Medicine block on February 6. Though she was admitted with symptoms suspected to be of GBS, she had diabetes and hypertension. She was given treatment as per protocols and her condition had improved under medical supervision.
On Monday morning, Superintendent of KGH P. Sivananda on routine rounds of the ward met Renuka, who complained of chest pain and collapsed all of a sudden. She was immediately shifted to the ICU and given prompt medical attention but she failed to recover. An ECG test revealed that she suffered myocardial infarction and efforts of the doctors and nurses to revive her went in vain.
“Yesterday, she spoke normally and today, she collapsed right in front of my eyes, when I was in the morning rounds of the ward. It’s unfortunate. She suffered an acute heart attack. The death was due to acute heart attack, and she did not die of GBS,” Dr. Sivananda told The Hindu on Monday.
