Hyderabad: A Hyderabad doctor lost 1.3 lakh after falling for a fake health insurance renewal offer. The incident, which occurred in the city’s Kurmaguda area, has prompted the Hyderabad cyber crime wing to launch an investigation after the doctor reported the scam.
According to the cyber crime police, the 34-year-old doctor, who runs his own hospital in Kurmaguda, received a call a week ago from someone claiming to be an insurance company executive. The fraudster told him that the grace period for renewing his health insurance policy was about to expire, and if not renewed, the policy would be cancelled.
Posing as a representative from the company’s Mumbai office, the scammer requested a payment of 76,700 for the renewal, assuring the doctor that this amount was refundable and would come with additional benefits. The fraudster then claimed the doctor was eligible for a 3.5 lakh refund on the policy and convinced him to pay an additional 53,000 to secure a 5.5 lakh refund. After payment, the fraudster blocked the doctor’s number. TNN
