Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University (PJTAU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Hyderabad-based Indian Institute of Rice Research (IIRR) for collaborative efforts between the two institutions to provide better services to farmers.
The MoU was signed at PJTAU the presence of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Aldas Janaiah, Director of IIRR R. Meenakshi Sundaram and Registrar of PJTAU G.E.Ch. Vidyasagar.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Janaiah stressed the need for climate-resilient rice varieties and the importance of carbon credits for farmers. He highlighted the potential for Telangana to become one of the major exporters of rice to countries such as Philippines.
He stated that Telangana was producing about 5 million (50 lakh) tonnes of paddy in surplus to all its needs and contribution of the custom milled rice (CMR) to the Food Corporation of India for the public distribution system needs in the country. Promoting export of rice would be the right policy to overcome the problem of glut and loss to the farming community due to poor price in the market.
The VC suggested that there was a need to create awareness among the farming community on improving the quality of paddy production and yield by helping they by extending necessary technology support. Telangana has huge opportunities to export rice to Philippines by developing it as an industry, he noted.
Dr. Meenakshi Sundaram hoped that the MoU would help collaborative efforts and better coordination between the two institutions to extend better services to farmers.
