Ransomware attacks a bigger threat than reported, warns Telangana Special Chief Secretary

Special Chief Secretary (ITE&C, Industries and Commerce) Jayesh Ranjan at Shield 2025 in HICC on Wednesday.

The ransomware attacks reported by enterprises represent just the tip of an iceberg, occurring far more frequently than officially documented, said Special Chief Secretary (ITE&C, Industries and Commerce) Jayesh Ranjan on Wednesday (February 19).

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the two-day conference at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC), Mr. Ranjan emphasised the need for a reporting mechanism that allow companies to share details of cyber attacks.

“Companies often refrain from reporting incidents due to concerns over reputation and shareholder trust. A structured mechanism must be established where organisations can provide basic information, even anonymously, to law enforcement agencies, enabling them to identify patterns and respond effectively,” he stated.

He urged the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TCSB) to create a dedicated forum to address cyber attack cases and systematically curate data to help prevent similar incidents for other enterprises.

Highlighting the critical role of government cyber security, Mr. Ranjan noted, “The primary responsibility of government is to safeguard its own data. Government holds humungous amounts of highly sensitive information, making it a prime target for cross-national cyberattacks.”

Two-factor authentication

He also underscored the importance of public awareness and education in mitigating cyber crime. Encouraging people to adopt stronger security measures, he advocated for widespread use of two-factor authentication to protect personal accounts and sensitive data from cyber threats.

The final day of the event brought together leading cyber security experts, law enforcement officials, industry leaders, and academic institutions to discuss the future of digital security and explore solutions to emerging threats.
