T calls for urgent protective measures at Srisailam dam

Revised: dk
Hyderabad: Telangana irrigation engineer-in-chief and State Dam Safety Authority chairman G Anil Kumar on Wednesday wrote a letter to the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) chairman to take protective measures for the Srisailam Dam. He said during the 2009 floods to the Krishna River, significant scouring and formation of a large void in the plunge pool downstream of the dam’s spillway was noticed. He mentioned that reports also indicate, as per yet-to-be-made-public inspection reports of the National Institute of Oceanography following the commission of the AP govt, if unattended, this erosion poses a grave threat to its overall stability as the maximum height of the dam is 146 metre from the deepest foundation level.
Anil Kumar said it would have a cascading impact not only on Srisailam, but also on Nagarjunasagar, Pulichintala, and Prakasam Barrage. He urged the NDSA to take up remedial measures immediately.
