Hyderabad: With frequent and sudden floods during the monsoon season leading to significant loss of life and property in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the Telangana State Committee on Dam Safety (SCDS) has taken a proactive step to mitigate future flood risks by setting up a technical mechanism and coordination committee with chief engineers from neighbouring states.
Sources said the aim is to share crucial flood flow information from the Krishna and Godavari rivers, which affect both states. During a recent meeting in Hyderabad, the SCDS proposed the development of an integrated flood forecasting system, drawing on data from past flood events.
The committee has decided to collaborate with IIT-Hyderabad and IIT-Roorkee to create a comprehensive system capable of providing real-time flood alerts. The system will focus on upstream areas such as Karnataka and Maharashtra, tracking river inflows and outflows to Telangana and AP.
Officials highlighted several instances of severe flooding, including the 2009 disaster in Kurnool, when massive inflows from Karnataka led to the Srisailam dam nearly breaching.
