Hyderabad: A roadside chaat seller was arrested on Friday for a failed attempt to steal cash from an ATM in Shalibanda on Feb 15.
The accused, 24-year-old H Kashinath, had tried his hand at robbery to pay off a debt of Rs 30 lakh which he had borrowed from friends to play rummy online. But, unfortunately for him, the cash box he managed to remove was empty. Moghalpura police finally arrested Kashinath from his home in Aliyabad after tracing him through CCTV footage.
On Feb 15, police had received a complaint from the bank manager about the break-in at the ATM. Police probe revealed that the accused entered the ATM at 3:50 am and was there for two hours.
Kashinath used a stone to break the ATM lock and then used his hands to open the machine. He extracted a cash box, which was meant to collect rejected or fake currency. When he broke it open with a stone, he found to his shock that there was no cash inside. He threw the empty box in a nearby garbage and returned home, police said.
“The technician found all the remaining cassettes inside the ATM and Rs 7 lakh cash intact. There was no financial loss,” a cop said.
