Hyderabad: Despite multiple cases against cab touts, the problem continues to plague travellers at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) who end up being fleeced by these illegal cabbies misrepresenting themselves as legitimate taxi drivers, coercing travellers into shared rides and overcharging them.
As per data from the RGIA police station, 429 cases of cab touting were reported between Jan 1, 2024, and Feb 17 this year. This was in spite of the state govt enacting the Telangana State Prevention of Touting and Malpractices Against Tourists and Travellers Act in 2021 to curb such activities.
Hapless passengers have had to take to social media to express their ire over being taken for a ride by these illegal cabbies.
For instance, on Jan 13, a user named Deepa posted on X, tagging CM Revanth Reddy: “A taxi operator at Hyderabad’s Airport (RGIA) deceived passengers by falsely presenting themselves as legitimate drivers. They coerce travellers into shared rides without prior consent, leading to extended journeys and inflated costs (sic).”
Another traveller described the difficulties of getting a taxi to Hyderabad airport: “It’s a nightmare to get a taxi to the airport in Hyderabad. Drivers demand extra money, ride cancellations, rude behaviour.”
Many also highlighted how these unauthorised drivers mob travellers as soon as they exit the airport ramp towards the taxi area.
Acknowledging the issue, GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd said that steps have been taken to address it.
“The Hyderabad airport has been closely working with the various stakeholders to ensure smooth travel through our airport. We have been sensitising travellers to avoid using unauthorised cab services,” a spokesperson stated.
Authorities said that they have deployed 31 anti-touting security personnel at multiple touchpoints to prevent unauthorised operators from targeting passengers. A special patrol team in collaboration with police is also there to monitor the situation, they said.
RGIA officials also pointed out that authorised transport options including radio taxis, app-based cabs, prepaid taxis, car rentals, EVs and Pushpak buses were available round the clock. Real-time cab availability is also displayed at the baggage belt area and display boards detailing transport options have been placed at strategic locations. Passenger service associates are also stationed at cab zones to assist travellers. A dedicated help desk near Aeroplaza is available for further assistance, they said.
Also, the TGSRTC Pushpak boarding point has also been relocated to pick-up point D, reducing the distance for those opting for bus transport, officials said.
