Waltair Railway Division celebrates 100 years of electrification in Indian Railways with walkathon and exhibition

A walkathon was organised by the Waltair Division of East Coast Railway on Friday to commemorate 100 years of electrification in Indian Railways, which had marked a first significant step towards a greener rail system.

The walkathon, which commenced at the DRM’s office at Dondaparthy, concluded at Visakhapatnam Railway Station. Over 200 participants from various departments participated in the walkathon, which was led by DRM Manoj Kumar Sahoo. Senior Divisional Electrical Engineer (Traction) B. Shanmukha Rao, along with senior electrical officials and Branch Officers of Waltair Division, coordinated the programme.

The first electric train in India operated from Platform 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus) to Kurla in Mumbai on February 3, 1925. This milestone came just 72 years after the launch of the first-ever Indian train on April 16, 1853. The electric train was the original version of the Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Manoj Kumar Sahoo said that several activities, including an exhibition and seminars, were being organised on Friday to mark the occasion.

The exhibition showcased the evolution of electric locomotives with informative display boards, miniature working models and other exhibits highlighting the technological advancements in railway electrification.
