Boy, 6, trapped in lift, dies; Cops suspect malfunction | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: A six-year-old boy, who was trapped between a lift and the wall of the elevator shaft in an apartment in Masab Tank on Friday, and was rescued, passed away on Saturday morning due to multi-organ failure while undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Police suspect a mechanical malfunction of the lift could have led to the tragedy, which unfolded when Arnav was entering the elevator with his grandfather. Without warning, the lift moved, leaving Arnav’s legs suspended in the doorframe while his upper body was caught between the elevator and the wall of lift shaft.
“The boy was stuck there, trapped from the waist up. His torso was crushed as he struggled to breathe,” a Nampally police officer investigating the case said.
The extraction process took over two hours, during which Arnav suffered multiple seizures. His vital organs, including kidneys and liver, were severely damaged.
Despite quick action from residents who heard Arnav’s screams, rescue efforts proved difficult. Emergency responders, including local police, fire department, and DRF teams, took part in the complex rescue operation that involved cutting through the elevator grills and providing oxygen support to the trapped boy. By the time Arnav was freed, he had lost consciousness due to oxygen deprivation, police said.
Arnav was rushed to Niloufer Hospital but, despite being put on life support throughout the night, he passed away on Saturday morning.
Ajay Kumar Masalkar, father of the little boy, was devastated. “May be a malfunction caused it, but I have lost my only son —nothing matters to me now,” he said.
The boy’s parents work in the private sector. Shyam Kumar, a family friend, raised questions about maintenance of the lift. “It is still not known how the lift suddenly moved up in such a way. Only police can tell us what led to the tragedy or if there was any malfunction,” he said.
Nampally MLA, Majid Hussain, called for enhanced security measures and regular maintenance checks for elevators in apartment complexes.
