
German Election Results 2025 Live Updates: Germany’s opposition conservatives won the national election on Sunday, putting leader Friedrich Merz on track to be the next chancellor while the far-right Alternative for Germany came in second, its best ever result, exit polls showed, as per reports by AP. The conservative CDU/CSU bloc won 28.5% of the vote, followed by the AfD with 20%, as per an exit poll published by ZDF public broadcaster.
Setting of the election: Germany headed to polls on Sunday to elect a new government. The elections come at a crucial time, in view of concerns regarding the stagnation of Europe’s biggest economy, issues relating to migration and the war between Ukraine and Russia causing uncertainty.
Issues that might have been the deciding factor: The primary issue which might have influenced decision-making among voters is the state of the German economy, which has witnessed a stagnation in the past couple of years. The recent attacks committed by migrants has brought the issue of migration to the general elections, with Merz promising to stop entry to the country without proper documents, and to increase deportations, AP reported. Apart from this, the contesting parties had also assured support to Ukraine against its war with Russia.
