Many students with valid hall tickets not allowed to take test for welfare schools in Telangana

Hyderabad: Despite having a valid hall ticket, several students who appeared for the Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission to residential educational institutions were not allowed to take the test as their names were on the rejected list. The exam was held in all district headquarters on Sunday.
“My daughter went to the examination centre but was sent back. When we questioned them, the officials said they could not allow her because her name was on the rejected list. They said there was nothing they could do as no OMR sheet was prepared for the said student,” said R Ravinder, whose daughter was not allowed to take the exam at a centre in Vikarabad. The parent added that at least three students in the said centre were not allowed to take the exam.
The CET examination is conducted for admission to Class 6 in residential institutions in Telangana run by various welfare societies — social, tribal and backward classes — and general residential schools across the state. Children belonging to families with an annual income of less than 1.5 lakh in rural areas and 2 lakh in urban areas are eligible to appear in these examinations.
The parents questioned why children from economically backward families were being denied an opportunity when they had applied well in advance and even had hall tickets.
Meanwhile, officials said they had to stop many children from taking the exam because they did not meet the eligibility criteria. “We had to put 1,522 students on the rejected list because they did not meet the eligibility criteria. Their income was higher than the prescribed amount or they submitted fake certificates. In some cases, students submitted more than one application,””said K Sarada, joint secretary (academic), Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TGSWREIS), who is part of the team overseeing the conduct of the examination.
Applications for the CET will be accepted between Dec 21, 2024 and Feb 6, 2025.
