Hyderabad: A 25-year-old man was arrested by Yacharam police in Rachakonda commissionerate on Saturday for sexually abusing a 70-year-old mentally challenged homeless woman.
According to the police, the accused Srirailam, a resident of Mall, sexually assaulted her in Dec 2024. As the woman was mentally disabled and had no family, she did not report the matter to the police. However, the police were alerted to the incident a week ago by other homeless people who overheard the incident.
Based on the information, the Yacharam police registered a case, conducted discreet investigations and eventually found out that the incident happened when the woman was sleeping in front of an ATM in Mall Town on Dec 10.
The police analysed the CCTV footage of the ATM that day and identified the accused, Srisailam, who works in a hotel, and the woman.
As a result, Srirailam was arrested and sent to judicial custody, while the woman was also sent for medical examination. Further investigations are underway, said A Narsimha Rao, Station House Officer, Yacharam.
