Two gold coins of Kalyani Chalukya princess, Akkadevi, who governed parts of present-day Karnataka in the 11th century CE, have been found in Telangana State in what is said to be a rare discovery.
The coins were found near Madugula village in Telangana and have inscriptions in the Kannada language with characters of the 11th century CE.
K. Munirathnam Reddy, Director (Epigraphy), Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), said, “The wording reads as “Sri Gunadabendagi” translated as “Beauty of Virtues”, and the coins were found with the help of Dema Raja Reddy, a Hyderabad-based neurosurgeon.”
Dr. Munirathnam said that akadevi (1010 CE- 1064 CE) was the daughter of Vikramaditya V. and Sister of Jayasimha II. She ruled as a governor of an area known as kishukadu, situated in the present reasons of Bidar, Bagakot, and Vijayapura. The princess was also called gunadangi, said Dr. Munirathnam.
Describing it as an important discovery, he said that it was the first time that they had unearthed Akkadevi gold coins and was a testament to her influence in the region. There has been a spate of discoveries of new inscriptions in recent times, and Dr. Munirathan attributed it to an awareness campaign of the Epigraphy Department on the importance of conserving inscriptions.
