Samsung is slowly tweaking the purpose of the S Pen on its devices and the next major change could be related to the design of the Fold.

The S Pen is slowly getting less focus from Samsung.
Samsung is reportedly planning major changes to its next-gen foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 7. As per Jukanlosreve of ET News, the South Korean tech giant might remove the conventional S Pen to save space and enhance portability.
This major shift by Samsung is expected to reduce the thickness of the next Fold by around 0.6mm, bringing it closer to the sub-10mm mark when folded. For comparison, the standard Galaxy Z Fold 6 measures 12.2mm, while the special edition Galaxy Z Fold SE (available in select Asian regions) is already 10.6mm.
But does this signal the end of traditional S Pen functionality in Samsung’s flagship foldable? Not necessarily. Reports suggest that Samsung is developing a redesigned S Pen, akin to the Apple Pencil, which would interact with the phone through an electrical field instead of relying on a built-in digitiser in the display.
Talking about the display, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is likely to feature an 8-inch internal screen, up from 7.6 inches on the Z Fold 6. The outside cover display is also expected to expand to 6.5 inches, matching the size of the Z Fold Special Edition.
However, the phone is likely to retain the same M13 OLED panel as its predecessor, meaning improvements in brightness or display quality might be minimal.
Interestingly, this development coincides with consumer complaints about the lack of Bluetooth connectivity in the S Pen for the Galaxy S25 Ultra, implying that Samsung is reconsidering its approach to stylus technology throughout its product range.
Samsung’s push to make its foldable phone slimmer comes as competition in the market intensifies. Rival devices like the Oppo Find N5, which boasts a folded thickness of just 8.93mm, have raised consumer expectations for sleek and compact foldable designs.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is expected to launch in August this year, though pricing details remain under wraps. Additionally, Samsung is reportedly working on its first tri-fold smartphone, which could make its debut sometime in 2025.
