Telugu will be implemented as a compulsory subject for Class 9 students in all CBSE, ICSE, IB and other Board-affiliated schools in Telangana starting 2025-26 academic year.
It will be compulsory for Class 10 students from the 2026-27 academic year, Secretary Yogita Rana notified in an order on Tuesday. For teaching and examinations, standard Telugu ‘Singidi’ will be replaced with simple Telugu ‘Vennela’ with 089 code as per the CBSE subject list, the order specified.
In a detailed explanation of the development, it was said that Telugu teaching should be compulsory in CBSE, ICSE and IB schools too as per the Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Act, 2018.

However, “due to various reasons, the previous government did not implement it in schools in full scale. The new government wishes to implement teaching of Telugu compulsorily in the State and hence the appropriate measures now,” the note stated.
As part of the decision by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Tuesday, to encourage simplified learning and interest for the language, simple Telugu ‘Vennela’ textbook will be used for Classes 9 and 10. Implementing ‘simple Telugu’ will be beneficial even for students who hail from non-Telugu States or whose mother tongue is not Telugu, it noted.
