Senior Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor, in a candid conversation with The Indian Express, opened up about his future in politics, speculations about him joining the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Tharoor, and the intra-party differences in Congress among a host of other topics.

Hosted by Liz Mathew and called Varthamanam with liz mathew, Tharoor, during the chat, reaffirmed his belief in liberalism and India’s pluralistic ethos. “I have always been a classic liberal. I oppose communalism and believe in social justice alongside economic growth,” he stated.

On speculations of him joining the BJPTharoor dismissed the idea citing ideological differences with the ruling party.

While addressing the issue of intra-party conflicts in the Congress, the Thiruvananthapuram MP said, “Some in my own party oppose me, but I speak for India and Kerala’s future.” He further insisted that despite facing criticism, he is loyal to Congress and is willing to take on a larger role in the party if required.

Speaking about his political future, Tharoor refrained from making any definitive plans but reiterated his commitment towards public service.

“I didn’t enter politics as a career,” Tharoor emphasized, highlighting his background in the United Nations before being invited by Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singhto join electoral politics.

While he has already announced that this will be his last parliamentary campaign, the senior Congress leader said that he remains open to contributing in various capabilities. “If the party wants to utilize my strengths, I’ll be there. If not, I have other options,” he said, referring to his writing and global speaking engagements.

When it comes to ideological leanings, Tharoor said that he has always been a classic liberal. “I oppose communalism and believe in social justice alongside economic growth,” he stated.

Reflecting on his personal life, he revealed that while his mother encourages him to remarry, he is content with his current phase. “God hasn’t made me feel the need for it now,” he remarked.
