I am in the final stages of the cleaning of both the cylinder head and the block.
BHPian Jeroen recently shared this with other enthusiasts:
Marc started work on my Spider last Friday. Today I went over to see.
The idea was to remove the cylinder head and inspect the liner and pistons to determine the extent of the damage. If we were lucky, we might just get away with a bit of in-situ honing of the cylinder walls. Unfortunately, the problem was more severe, which meant Marc had already pulled the liners and pistons when I arrived!
Always difficult to see on images like this, but the damage to each piston, due to oil being flushed away by too much fuel was very apparent. Also, each piston/liner was identical in its wear pattern.
So Marc is going to install a new set of liners, pistons and piston rings. If I’m honest, I am quite happy with that. As they say, third time lucky!
Work on my Jeep’s cylinder head and engine block continues at my shop.
A simple trick to check for high/low spots. Get your feeler gauge out, 0.05m, and something absolutely straight, e.g. steel ruler and check in multiple places if you can pull the feeler out.
I am in the final stages of the cleaning of both the cylinder head and the block. Which also means checking all threads. I bought a special tap. But I’m still not convinced it is the correct one. It was very tight and I don’t want to risk running it 12 times into the cylinder block.
So I took one of the old bolts and cut three slits into it with my angle grinder. The makeshift clearance tap works as a treat!
I need to get myself a special set of clearance taps. I haven’t come across them, need to start looking for them.
I also took some more measurements of the last bolt, just underneath the corner of the chassis. I need to make sure I can get the special socket and the torque wrench underneath. It also needs to accommodate a nut that holds the mass wire onto the engine. I took one of the old bolts and experimented a bit, how much I needed to cut off to get enough room to get my torque wrench into that tight corner. I think we will be ok with this.
I started cleaning the exhaust-inlet manifold. Initially, I had a piece of cloth over the open engine. Would not work as it kept catching on various of my cleaning apparatus.
A piece of plywood worked much better!
Also, spent some time “hoovering out” the various holes in the block with my brake vacuum suction thingy. Works well.
I aim to spend all of tomorrow working on the Jeep. In the evening I want to ask one of my neighbours to help me put the cylinder head back on. I have an idea of what I might be able to do by myself. But I need to check tomorrow if that would work.
To be continued
