GHMC rolls out smart parking pilot project to ease congestion

Hyderabad: In a bid to tackle Hyderabad’s growing parking crisis, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has initiated a smart parking project in the Khairatabad zone. The civic body has already initiated the tender process for this pilot initiative, which, if successful, will be expanded to the remaining five zones — Secunderabad, Charminar, LB Nagar, Serilingampally, and Kukatpally.
These smart parking facilities will include indoor parking lots, on-street parking, and off-street parking areas, all equipped with modern technology. Features such as occupancy sensors, high-resolution surveillance cameras, digital display boards, vending kiosks, EV charging points, WiFi connectivity, and a dedicated mobile application will enhance efficiency. Additionally, the entire infrastructure will be directly linked to the Command and Control Centre for real-time monitoring.
“Effective parking management is crucial for optimising road space and ensuring smooth movement for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and public transport,” a senior GHMC official said. “With this smart system, we aim to ease congestion and provide a seamless parking experience through technology-driven solutions.”
The smart parking system will include weather-resistant sensors to detect the availability of two-wheeler and four-wheeler spaces, transmitting real-time updates to a centralised platform. AI-enabled high-resolution cameras will capture vehicle details, monitor entry and exit, recognise number plates, and flag unusual activities to enhance security.
To streamline user experience, GHMC will introduce a mobile and web-based application that will allow motorists to check parking availability, reserve EV charging slots, and facilitate QR code-based entry, exit, and digital payments. “Real-time monitoring and data analytics will help track peak hours, usage trends, and overall efficiency, ensuring better traffic management,” an official added.
